Asbestos management plans adopted by less than half of NSW councils

AsbestosConcerns have been raised over the protection of workers and the community from naturally occurring asbestos as it was revealed that less than half of NSW councils have management plans in place.

The ABC has been investigating the threat of naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) which is present in about 1 per cent of the state.

The potentially lethal mineral is found in rocks and has historically been used in building materials.

The discovery of NOA during roadworks at Oberon on the state’s central tablelands has raised concerns within the community about the exposure to council staff carrying out the grading and residents who use the road.
