Food poisoning: An alphabetical guide to the bugs that cause it and how you can avoid it

norovirunFood poisoning occurs when you consume food or drink that has been contaminated by bacteria, viruses or the toxins produced by some bugs.

If you have ever had a bout of food poisoning, you will know how unpleasant it can be. Common symptoms include nausea and vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, headache and fever.

In most cases, the illness passes in a few days. The main treatment is making sure you do not get dehydrated, which can happen very quickly in small children.
